In-Depth Information
It was the world's first serious attempt to reach the pole, an effort that required
pulling sleds laden with tons of supplies across miles and miles of ice in extreme
conditions. One of the team's most able man-haulers, Crean quickly gained his
mates' trust and respect for his hard work, calm presence, and cheerful (if tuneless)
singing. The Discovery Expedition pushed the boundaries of Antarctic exploration,
but didn't reach the pole (Britain's second attempt, in 1909 under Shackleton, got
much closer before also turning back).
