Kinsale's importance peaked during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, when
sailing ships ruled the waves, turning maritime countries into global powers. Kin-
sale was Ireland's most perfect natural harbor and the gateway to both Spain and
France—potentially providing a base for either of these two powers in cutting off
English shipping. Because of this, two pivotal battles were fought here in the 17th
century: in 1601 against the Spanish, and in 1690 against the French. Two great
forts were built to combat these threats from the Continent. England couldn't rule
the waves without ruling Kinsale.
