Kinsale's History
Kinsale's remarkable harbor has made this an important port since prehistoric
times. The bay's 10-foot tide provided a natural shuttle service for Stone Age
hunter-gatherers: They could ride it, at two miles per hour twice a day, for the eight
miles up and down the River Bandon. In the Bronze Age, when people discovered
that it takes tin and copper to make bronze, tin came from Cornwall (in southwest
England)andcoppercamefromthispartofIreland.From500 B.C. to A.D. 500,Kin-
sale was a rich trading center. The result: Lots of Stonehenge-type monuments are
nearby. The best is Drombeg Stone Circle (a one-hour drive west, just off R-597/
Glandore Road).
