Trim makes a great landing pad into—or launching pad out of—Ireland. If you're fly-
ing into or out of Dublin Airport and don't want to deal with big-city Dublin, this is a per-
fect alternative—an easy 45-minute, 30-mile drive away. You can rent a car at the airport
and make Trim your first overnight base (getting used to driving on the other side of the
road in easier country traffic). Or spend your last night here before returning your car at
the airport. Weather permitting, my evening stroll (described later) makes for a fine first or
last night in the Emerald Isle.
Trim's main square is a traffic roundabout, and everything's within a block or two. Most
of the shops and eateries are on or near Market Street, along with banks and a supermar-
ket.
Tourist Information
The TI is right next to the castle entrance and includes a handy coffee shop. Drop in to
pick up a free map and check out the collage of photos in the entryway, showing the
castle dolled up for the filming of
Braveheart

The TI organizes historical walking tours of the town, led by enthusiastic volunteers
(€5, pay at TI, daily at 14:30 and 19:00, one hour; tours depart from the bog oak sculp-
ture—facing the TI, go 100 feet down sidewalk to right; tel. 046/943-7227).

Parking:
To park on the street or in a public lot, use the pay-and-display parking system.
Buy a ticket at one of the machines spaced along the street, and display it on your
dashboard (€1/hour, 2-hour max, Mon-Sat 9:00-18:00, free Sun).
