You're most likely to hear the Irish Gaelic language (similar to but different from Scot-
tish Gaelic, and—more distantly—Welsh) spoken in the Gaeltacht, the government-sub-
sidized cultural preserve found mostly in far western coastal regions. But less than 5 per-
cent of the Irish are fluent in Gaelic, and school kids—who must pass rigorous exams to
graduate—agonize over its complex grammar.
