One of Europe's lesser-known battlegrounds (but huge in Irish and British history), this is
the pastoral riverside site of the pivotal battle in which the Protestant British broke Cath-
olic resistance, establishing Protestant rule over all Ireland and Britain.

Background: It was here in 1690 that Protestant King William III, with his English/
Irish/Dutch/Danish/French Huguenot army, defeated his father-in-law—who was also his
uncle—Catholic King James II and his Irish/French army. King William's forces, on the
north side of the Boyne, managed to fight their way across the river, and by the end of the
