1821 visit. The East Pier is a quiet jetty barbed with a squat lighthouse and the closest
views of Ireland's Eye. If you want to get even closer to the island, book a boat excursion

Hiking Trails
Trailsabovetheeasterncliffsofthepeninsulaofferenjoyable,breezyexercise.Forascen-
ic three-hour round-trip, walk past the East Pier and martello tower, following Balscadden
Road uphill. You'll soon pass Balscadden House, where writer W. B. Yeats spent part of
hisyouth(watchforplaqueonleft).Wheretheroaddeadends,you'llfindthewell-marked
trailhead. The trail is easy to follow, and soon you'll be walking south around the craggy
coastline to grand views of the Bailey Lighthouse on the southeast rim of the peninsula.
The gate to the lighthouse grounds is always locked, so enjoy the view from afar before
retracing your steps back to Howth.
