The Famous Record-Breaking Records Book
Look up “beer” in the Guinness World Records , and you'll discover that the
strongest brew ever sold had an alcohol volume of 55 percent (a Scottish brew
called The End of History ), and that the record for removing beer bottle caps with
one's teeth is 68 in one minute. But aside from listing records for amazing—or
amazingly stupid—feats, this famous record book has a more subtle connection
with beer.
In 1951, while hunting in Ireland's County Wexford, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the
managing director at Guinness Breweries, got into a debate with his companions
over which was the fastest game bird in Europe: the golden plover or the red grouse.
