In-Depth Information
Curaçao
Couples who wish to get married in Curaçao must start the paperwork
early. Up to two months is required to get a marriage license after a writ-
ten request is made by a non-Antillean resident.
All the major resorts have wedding consultants who will guide you
through the process, but the basic requirements are:
Both the bride and groom must be temporary residents of the
island for at least three days.
The couple must apply for a non-resident marriage license and
present passports and birth certificates.
If either the bride or groom have been married before, they
must provide an official divorce decree or a death certificate for
their former spouse as proof that they are legally eligible for
marriage.
Couples must present return airline tickets as proof that they
intend to leave the island.
No blood tests are required.
A $167 fee is charged for the marriage license.
Locals follow traditional island rituals when planning a wedding, with
civil ceremonies taking place quietly during the day, and church ceremo-
nies taking place in the evening. Formal weddings tend to be very elabo-
rate. This tradition began during the island's early days when slaves were
not permitted to marry, and only people with the most money and highest
social status held big weddings.
Your resort or wedding consultant will help you arrange for a church wed-
ding, or you can contact one of the following for information:
Antiano Baptist Church ,
437-8262.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon),
437-2686.
Ebenezer Protestant Church ,

Jehovah's Witnesses ,

Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue ,

Receptions on the island are usually big, boisterous affairs with a lot of
food and drink. One entire table is dedicated to a variety of cakes, includ-
ing a white multi-tiered cake and the local (and quite expensive) bolo pretu
or dark fruit cake. Guests look forward to leaving with a nicely wrapped
piece of bolo pretu to enjoy at home.
