Cruising
The number of cruise ship visitors has risen significantly
during the past few years. The MS Libertador was the first
ship to bring passengers to Aruba in the early 1950s, but reg-
ular visits by passenger ships didn't begin until 1958, when
the Santa Rosa and Santa Paula began docking in Aruba
every Thursday.
Large passenger ships began regular visits during the 1970s, and cur-
rently many major international lines (Cunard, Holland America, Italian
Line, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Sun Line, Russian Black Sea Shipping
Co., Sitmar, and others) call on all three islands. Aruba draws approxi-
mately 500,000 cruise ship passengers per year, with CuraƧao in second
place at approximately 350,000 cruise passengers. Bonaire is growing in
popularity as a cruise destination and currently averages about 50,000
cruise ship visitors per year.
The National Association of Cruise Oriented Agencies (NACOA) is
an organization of certified travel agents who have made a serious com-
mitment to helping travelers find the cruise vacation that best suits their
expectations. To find a cruise-travel specialist in your area, go online to
www.nacoaonline.com.
The website for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)
gives cruisers information, current news, and ship profiles. Find them at
www.cruising.org.
