Shopping
Curaçao offers some of the best shopping in the Caribbean.
Pedestrian-only streets in Punda create a mall-like atmo-
sphere with many shops conveniently located in one area.
When cruise ships are docked in the harbor, merchants set
up stalls along the waterfront in Punda and Otrobanda.
Shopping centers on the outskirts of Willemstad add even more stores to
the 200 or so located in the city.
Most shops are open Monday-Saturday, 8:30 am-12:30 pm and 2-6 pm, but
some stay open continually throughout the day. Large stores accept credit
cards and US dollars, as well as Netherlands Antilles guilders. Street ven-
dors and small merchants usually accept US dollars, but most return
change in guilders.
Best Buys
When shopping on Curaçao, look for Caribbean-made clothing,
art, and jewelry, in addition to European imports, such as de-
signer clothes, shoes, jewelry, perfume, linens, and electronics.
Since the island is Dutch, Delft porcelain and hand-embroidered
table linens are good buys. While Curaçao is not actually a duty-
free island, the import taxes are low (about 3%), so prices are of-
ten better than in North America.
