Baja on Caracas Bay Island, near the old Beekenburg Fort at Spanish
Waters, has a sandy beach and a lot of watersports. The Baja Beach Club
is a lively place after dark. No admission charge.
Blauwbaai (Blue Bay) is a large shady beach just northwest of
Willemstad, near the village of Sint Michiel. It's popular with locals and
visitors because of the soft white sand. Facilities include showers, toilets,
and changing areas. No admission fee.
Daaibooibaai , at San Willibrordo, gets crowded on the weekends, so try
to visit during the week, when you'll probably have the whole place to
yourself. The beach is coral pebbles, and there are shade pergolas, but no
other facilities. Admission is $3 per car, and hours are 8 am-5:30 pm.
Porto Marie is a long sandy man-made beach west of the capital. Shade is
provided by rented umbrellas, and facilities include a bar, a watersports
center, showers, and toilets. The sea floor slopes gently from the beach so
children enjoy playing here. Admission is $2 per person on weekdays and
$2.75 on weekends; the beach is open daily, 8 am-6 pm.
Turtle Beach at Kas Abou, west of Willemstad, has particularly beautiful
water. Divers and snorkelers favor the offshore reef because of excellent
visibility. There's plenty of shade and good facilities, including showers,
toilets, and a small snack bar. Entrance fee is $5.75 per car on weekends
and $4.50 per car on weekdays.
Boca Sainta Martha , west of Willemstad, near the town of Soto, is the
location of the Sunset Waters Beach Resort (formerly Coral Cliff Resort),
and guests may use the lovely beach free of charge. Others must pay $4.50
per person.
Playa Kenepa and the nearby Playa Abou , a short distance south of
Westpunt, and the sandy coves are gorgeous. Residents cook on the
beaches on weekends, and things get pretty crowded, with families run-
ning in and out of the water. Try to visit on a weekday. Trees and thatch
umbrellas provide some shade, and the water is smooth and clear. Bring
your snorkeling gear. A fee is charged at Aou Beach: $2.50 per car Monday-
Saturday; $5 per car on Sunday.
Playa Lagun (also Lagoen) is a small cove surrounded by high cliffs south
of Westpunt. Little caves on the southeast end are fun to explore, and the
best entrance into the water is nearby. Concrete structures provide shelter
for picnics and naps. No admission charge.
Playa Jeremi , near Landhuis Jeremi and the town of Lagun, has no facil-
ities and little shade, but there's no entrance fee either, and the snorkeling
is great. Watch your step going down the steps from the parking lot to the
beautiful cove with picturesque rocks and calm water.
Playa Kalki is sheltered by the limestone Kadushi Cliffs near Westpunt
and an excellent choice for a day on the beach. Bring your snorkeling gear.
