By Bus
Some hotels have complimentary or small-fee shuttle vans
that take registered guests into town or to various beaches.
In addition, a fleet of large yellow buses (called konvoi
locally) run from Wilhelmina Plaza in Willemstad to many of
the most traveled areas of the island, including beaches. Ser-
vice is infrequent on Sundays, but on other days you can expect hourly
departures from city bus stops for in-town routes and two-hour intervals
for out-of-town routes.
Fares are given in guilders and based on direction/distance. A trip from the
capital to the far northwest end of the island will cost about NAfl 1.50
(85¢); in-town and eastern destinations cost NAfl 1 (56¢). If you're serious
about using public transportation, fill your pockets with guilders and pick
up a copy of Buki di Bus: Bus Schedules and Routes at the Tourist Office,
Pietermaai 19,
434-8200.
Touring the Island
W hether you see the capital of the Netherlands Antilles
with a guide or on your own, you'll discover plenty of
natural beauty (including more than 30 public beaches and a
national park), interesting historical sites, and colorful ar-
chitecture. The island is large compared to Aruba and
Bonaire, but quite manageable, at about 182 square miles.
