By Cruise Ship
Curaçao's cruise terminal in Otrobanda (a district within the
capital city of Willemstad) is just steps from the island's
charming Holland-like shopping district and UNESCO-
designated World Heritage Sites. During peak season, it's
not unusual to see two or more large passenger ships dock at
the modern terminal, and approximately 200,000 visitors arrive by ship
each year. Many find they don't have enough time on the island, and
return as stay-over visitors. Dolphin and Seawind visit the island year-
round, while lines such as Holland America , Princess , Carnival ,
Royal Caribbean , and Norwegian make frequent stops between Octo-
ber and April.
Tourist information and an ATM are located on the dock; taxi drivers and
tour operators meet arrivals to offer guided excursions of the capital and
island. Bus and mini-bus service is available from Punda (across the
Queen Emma Bridge) to several key tourist attractions, including the
Seaquarium and beach.
TIP: See Touring the Island , page 222, for a listing
of tour operators and information about sightseeing
by bus or taxi.
Leaving Curaçao
A departure tax (usually added to the cost of your airline
ticket) is charged before passengers check in for their
departing flight, and must be paid in US dollars or Nether-
lands Antilles guilders (NAfl). For international flights, the
tax is $22 or NAfl 36. For flights within the Netherlands An-
tilles, the tax is $10 or NAfl 17.
Confirm your outgoing flight the day before your departure, and remem-
ber to arrive at the airport one-two hours before departure, in order to
clear strict security checks.
