In-Depth Information
Tourist information, an ATM, restaurants, shops, and a casino are within
walking distance of the dock. If you don't sign up with your cruise line for a
shore excursion, you can take a taxi to the beach or hire a driver for a pri-
vate island tour.
TOUR OPERATORS and a selection of scheduled
excursions are listed under Touring the Island on
page 154.
Leaving Bonaire
T he international departure tax is $20 per person, and is
not usually included in the price of your airline ticket.
Some tour companies add the tax to your package price, so
be sure to ask before you pay. Passengers taking a domestic
flight to another ABC island pay $5.75 or NAfl 10 (see page
34 for currency exchange rates).
Getting Around
By Taxi
Bonaire is a small island and many taxi drivers hang around
the airport or town waterfront most of the day. If you want to
take a taxi from some other location, call the dispatch stand
at the airport,
717-8100.
Taxi drivers are excellent tour guides because, for the most
part, they grew up on the island and cover it by car every day. A private
tour runs about $25 per hour.
The government sets legal rates for unmetered taxis on Bonaire. Ask to
see a rate schedule or agree in advance on a fare before you get into the cab.
Expect to pay about $8 for a ride from the airport into town or to nearby
beach hotels. A trip from the airport to the popular dive hotels just north of
Kralendijk will run about $11. The fare to or from the waterfront in town is
set at $7-$10 for west coast beaches and hotels; approximately $20 to Lac
Bay on the east coast.
Taxi drivers are allowed to add an additional 20% to the regular fare on
official holidays, Sundays, between the hours of 7 pm and midnight, and
any time your belongings prevent them from closing their trunk securely.
Between midnight and 7 am, the fare is 50% higher.
