Supermarkets
If you're staying in a timeshare unit or private villa with
cooking facilities or you want to pack a picnic, seek out the
supermarkets north of Oranjestad, just inland from the
low-rise hotels. Prices are reasonable, and you can find
everything you need for an entire meal or quick snack. Soft
drinks, fresh fruits, meat, cheese, eggs, and fresh milk are
well stocked, and the larger stores have a good variety of
frozen and packaged foods. Many of the stores have an on-site bakery and
sell wine, beer and liquor. Things such as sun screen, over-the-counter
medicines, toothpaste, and deodorant are priced lower at supermarkets
than at hotel mini-marts. Prices are marked in Aruban florins, but the reg-
isters will convert your total to US dollars, and you can use cash or credit
cards to pay your bill.
Large supermarkets are open Monday-Saturday, 8 am-8 pm. Two to try:
Kong Hing , at Havenstraat 16, has wonderful Dutch imports, including
coffee and cheeses.
821-219.
Ling & Sons , at Italiestraat 26 behind Sun Plaza Mall, has a large variety
of deli foods, a good bakery, and fresh produce.
832-370.

up along the waterfront (or across a narrow coastal road) on
the island's northwest shore. Top-of-the-line accommodations are found in
glittering complexes on Palm, Eagle, Manchebo, and Druif Beaches. If you
find a good package deal at one of these resorts, take it.
High-rise resorts line Palm Beach, at the far north end of the island's
white-sand strip. Roadside and beach-side walkways connect these closely
clustered hotels, so guests may conveniently stroll to restaurants or other
