mopa boxes and sculp-
tures are sold at several
shops on the ABC Islands.
They are handcrafted by
the Indians of Colombia
and appear to be painted,
when in fact they are in-
laid with bits of hardened
resin produced by boiling
fruit from the mopa mopa
tree. In this ancient art form, the still-hot resin is
stretched, causing it to take on various colors. Once the
resin hardens, it is broken into small pieces, which are lay-
ered to create lovely boxes and figures.
