In-Depth Information
As a full-service country club and residential development, Tierra del Sol's
facilities include a full-length practice range, putting greens, chipping
areas, a luxurious clubhouse, a well-stocked pro shop, a full-service gour-
met restaurant, and a grill off the 18th green. (There's a $10-per-day fee
for unlimited practice.) Views from almost any area of the club include tur-
quoise sea, rolling terrain, and desert vegetation growing around huge
boulder formations. The picturesque California Lighthouse is in the dis-
tance and is particularly stunning from the third hole.
Wind is the major obstacle on this par-71, 6,811-yard course. But, the con-
stant breeze also makes play comfortably cool most of the time. A few
water hazards add a bit more challenge, but the fairways are wide and
planted in lush, well-groomed Bermuda grass.
Callaway clubs ($45) and shoes ($10) may be rented, and a storage locker
is available ($5) for the entire length of your vacation. Golf carts are outfit-
ted with a Parview GPS satellite dish and a 10.4-inch color screen that pro-
jects green overviews and gives the exact distance from the cart to the
center of the green, electronic scoring, and two-way communication with
the clubhouse.

The greens are Astroturf, and goats sometimes get in the way, but this odd
little golf course is a lot of fun. And, the fee is only $10. Water hazards and
sand traps add a challenge to the nine-hole course, which can be played
from different tees during 18-hole rounds. Golf carts and clubs are avail-
able at the pro shop, and a restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch.

Golf is only half the fun at this something-for-everyone entertainment cen-
ter. Two excellent 18-hole miniature courses are laid out around a moat
filled with paddle and bumper boats. Elsewhere on the property, there's a
batting cage, a bank of video games, and a mini-car race track.
Meals, snacks, and drinks are served at a casual on-site restaurant and a
lively bar. The Black Hog Saloon throws a BBQ Bash every Tuesday and
Thursday from 6:30-9:30 at a cost of $35 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and
under. The price includes a barbecue dinner, unlimited draft beer and soft
drinks, a round of golf, and a paddleboat ride. Entertainment stars the
Magnificent Horse and Harley Show with horse celebrities from Rancho El
Paso (see Horseback Riding , above). Alfredo's Restaurant offers nightly
specials with an Italian flavor that they claim is “just like Boston's North
