with odd numbers of nuclei or with even numbers of nuclei must be conserved in
the course of pressure variation. The total concentration of ions with even num-
bers of nuclei is given in Figure 4.19 by a hatch line, and as is seen, this statement
is roughly fulfilled. In reality for nitrogen ions which are drifting in nitrogen in
an external electric field, weak transitions between the above-mentioned pairs of
nitrogen ions take place. In particular, transitions between N 2 and N 3 ions were
reported in [87], and transitions between N 2 and N 3 ions were reported in [88].
Next, like the previous cases, the rate of establishment of thermodynamic equilib-
rium between different types of ions is determined by association of simple ions
with a nitrogen molecule in a three body collision. Figure 4.20 represents the rate
constants for these processes at room temperature if nitrogen ions are in nitrogen
in an external electric field [89].
