This demonstrates the extent to which the Townsend energy coefficient is the ratio
between the average electron and atom energies. Thus, the Townsend energy co-
efficient is a convenient parameter characterizing the mean electron energy with
respect to that of the atom. Figures 4.4 and 4.5 give the dependence of the charac-
teristic electron temperature on the electric field strength for electrons moving in
helium and argon, respectively, in accordance with experimental data [37].
