The future for Laos is growth. Tourism continues to develop, bringing with it much-needed
investment, and global trade links look set to increase, thanks partly to Laos's accession to
the World Trade Organization, completed in February 2013. Though, with powerful nations
like China funding the projects that are most likely to have a profound effect on economies
and environments - such as the high-speed rail link from Kunming to Thailand, expected to
be up and running by 2019 - it may be outsiders, rather than the people of Laos, who determ-
ine the country's destiny.
