SabaidyGuesthouse2 No. 24 Rd 031 212992. All budget travellers seem to head straight
to this guesthouse, sited in a qu iet, old residential area. Rooms ar e clean if spartan, and the
dorm is the best in town. Dorm 40,000K , double (shared bathroom) 80,000K
Salachampa No. 10 Rd, near Champasak Plaza 031 212273. An elegant, restored French
villa, with teak floors, verandas and a sitting room filled with antique furniture. All rooms
have bathrooms and a/c, but spurn the c heaper modern cottages on offer; rooms in the old

Thaluang Hotel At the northern end of No. 24 Rd 031 251399. Set around a compound

EATING AND DRINKING
Pakse has the best range of restaurants south of Vientiane, largely owing to the number of
foreigners working here and its mix of ethnic Vietnamese, Chinese and Lao communities.
Most of the town's better restaurants are found in the centre, in the triangular-shaped area
traced by roads 1, 10 and 13. South of here, along the Mekong, are dozens of similarly priced
restaurants with great views over the water, selling everything from grilled duck to Thai food.
Daolin At the junction of Route 13 and No. 24 Rd 020 5573 3199. Positively bustling most
of the day, Daolin lures people in with low prices and reliable backpacker food that's pre-
pared in an open kitchen. Apart from the usual noodle dishes and cheese baguettes (15,000K),
there's decent local coffee and gooey ice-cream sundaes (20,000K). Daily 6.30am-9pm.
Dok Mai No. 24 Rd, south of Route 13 020 9800 8652. It's not quite like being in Italy,
but the pasta dishes (from 30,000K) served at this skinny restaurant are pretty good, and
drizzled with proper extra virgin olive oil. A quick warning: there's no pizza on the menu.
Daily 11am-11pm.
Le Panorama On the top floor of Pakse Hotel. Worth a visit for the views across Pakse, Le
Panorama is probably the most romantic spot in town, serving Asian and European dishes.
The service and food don't quite match the ambience, but considering the location, the prices
(mains around 45,000K) aren't too bad. Daily 4.30-11.30pm.
Na Dao North of the Champasak Grand on No. 16W Rd 031 255558. The classiest act
in town, Na Dao serves a delicious range of French dishes (think rib-eye steak and duck
