is reserved for Thai and Lao nationals. Tourists must use the 1.6km-long Friendship Bridge
II, 5km north of Savannakhet, which has connected the two cities since 2007. Buses bound
for Mukdahan leave Savannakhet's main bus terminal (12 daily; 14,000K), stopping at Thai
immigration, where visas on arrival are available. The 40min bus ride ends at Mukdahan's
main bus station, a short ride from the town centre.
ToVietnam A daily bus to Vietnam leaves Savannakhet at 10pm. Different cities are served,
including Dong Ha, Hué and Da Nang (80,000-110,000K), depending on the day of the week
you travel. A VIP bus bound for Dong Ha (Mon-Fri; 7hr) leaves the bus station at 10.30am.
Note that even “direct” buses usually require a vehicle change (or a long wait) at the border.
Local buses leave Savannakhet's bus station for the Lao Bao border (6hr) at 7.30am, 9am and
noon each day.
