places to stay in town, with large, brick-lined room s in two gorgeous wooden buildings, set
back from the main drag, and a pleasant restaurant. 80,000K
EATING AND DRINKING
During the day, the fresh market is a great place for a cheap bowl of fõe and you can also
buy small portions of larp and other dishes here. At night, the main street fills with the scent
of grilled meat from the nightmarket - there are a number of tables in the central compound
where you can enjoy the food over a cold beer, and be sure to try the delicious sweet sticky
rice with grated coconut for dessert.
Bamboo Lounge Main street 020 5568 0031, forestretreatlaos.com . Attached to the
Forest Retreat trekking office, this Kiwi-run, eco-themed bar-restaurant is always the busiest
place on the strip. The genuine wood-fired pizzas (50,000-90,000K), baked in an oven out
front, are an indulgent treat, and pastas, risottos, sandwiches and daily specials are also on
offer. A good choice at either end of the day, with excellent coffee and cocktails (Lao daiquiri
15,000K). Daily 7am-11.30pm.
The Boat Landing 6km south of the centre 086 312398, theboatlanding.com . The
Boat Landing 's rustic restaurant is a great place to sample quality Lao food, with plenty of
jeows (dips) on offer, including a local speciality with sweet rattan (8000K). Try the tongue-
tingling Akha ginger chicken soup with chilli, garlic, mint and shallots (38,000K), accom-
panied by one of their speciality fresh juices. During high season Green Discovery runs a
nightly tuk-tuk to the restaurant from the centre of town - pop into the office for more details.

Lai'sPlace Off the main street (no phone). This simple, Black Tai-run restaurant off the main
drag is one of the best places in town for Lao food, the menu encompassing a good selection
of jeows (served with sticky rice, from 15,000K) and a few dishes of tribal origin. The owner
was trained in cooking some Western dishes up at Forest Retreat, and also turns out a mean
burger (from 20,000K). Daily 7am-9pm.
Manikong Bakery Opposite the night market 020 2235 4446. With its cute gingham
tablecloths and friendly welcome, this efficient new bakery-café is a great breakfast choice,
with fresh croissants and muffins, plus sets from 35,000K. The ham, egg and cheese bagel
(25,000K) will set you up for the day, and there are also the usual Asian and Western dishes
for later on. Daily 6.30am-10pm.
Manychan Opposite the night market 020 2292 7878. A relaxed place, popular throughout
the day, offering a good range of Lao food and some interesting French-influenced Western
dishes such as steak with blue-cheese sauce (55,000K). The fruit shakes are particularly deli-
cious (10,000K). Daily 6.30am-10.30pm.
