Decorative grids that ef ectively break a large sheet of glass into smaller four-
by-six-inch panes would also be ef ective. Outside screens and shades may be
practical in some situations, and certainly are visible to birds. Lighting a win-
dow to reduce rel ection during the day and providing shrubs outside windows
rather than luring birds to houseplants inside windows are also good prac-
tices. The typical hawk and falcon decals that many windows bear are not ef-
fective, however. The key to preventing collisions is to make the window
visible, not scary.
Keeping birds from battering into large commercial buildings, many of
which feature immense glass facades, is a challenge in many cities. Increas-
ingly, buildings in bird-rich areas are being required to incorporate bird-
friendly designs, especially in terms of their windows. In Canada, a 2013 court
