Application and Database Layers
The Application and Database layers in SAP NW AS Java are implemented as a Java
cluster.
Figure 3-3
shows the Java cluster architecture. The Java cluster architecture and
startup control and framework are implemented differently in NW 7.0 and NW 7.1. Both
cluster architectures will be discussed in this chapter.

The simplest SAP Java cluster architecture installation involves the following components:
• Java central instance with a dispatcher and at least one server process
• Software Deployment Manager (SDM)
• Central services instance
• Database
