job at your current contract so that you can get references and land the next contract.
SAP Basis Career Path Options
You current SAP Basis job can lead you in senior IT roles in the organization. Some of the
career path options are discussed in the following sections.
Basis Architect
After working as a SAP Basis administrator for few years, you can move into Basis lead or
a Basis architect role. This will allow you to gradually move from being an individual con-
tributor to a lead role. Usually, you will be leading a team of Basis administrators and will
be leading the work planning efforts and contributing toward some of the architectural de-
cisions.
Technical Architect
The next step in the career ladder is the SAP technical architect. SAP technical architects
usually come from a SAP Basis background. These professionals will lay out the design
guidelines and framework for any new SAP solutions and make sure that they comply with
the enterprise standards and mesh well with the corporate datacenter. Being a SAP technical
architect is a much broader responsibility than the Basis administrator or Basis architect
role, and gives you exposure to senior IT management in your organization.
Enterprise Architect
SAP technical architects who like working in the technical areas and do not have much in-
terest in IT management can branch out into a much broader role of an enterprise architect.
This role involves all enterprise business applications and not just SAP. Your SAP technical
architecture background will help you transition into this role and add value to your organiz-
ation. This role will also leave you an option of moving into more general IT management
roles if you change your mind and want to move in that direction at a later time.
