Message Server
A message server is an independent program that lists all the servers in the SAP system. The
message server decides which server a user logs on to (particularly in environments with
multiple application servers). As shown in
Figure 2-3
, the message server communicates
with the dispatcher based on the load statistics of the application server at any given time.

Rule:
A SAP system with any number of application servers has one message server.
Gateway
The gateway service is responsible for communication between different SAP systems and
external systems.

shows a gateway service acting as a communication link
between three application servers.
