Database Reference
In-Depth Information
Oracle block corruptions and therefore ensures the integrity of the backup. For backing up
very large databases, a combination of RMAN and parallel backup of data and log files to
several tapes is supported by SAP. This will cut down both the backup and recovery time of
very large databases.
Backup Cycle (Tape Cycle)
A backup cycle or a tape cycle refers to the number of tapes that will be used for the
backups and the cycle that will be used to reuse the tapes.
Backup Strategy
The following backup cycle strategy is recommended and is a best practice that can be used
by SAP implementations:
• A 28-day tape cycle with a backup cycle of four weeks
• Complete online backup every day
• Complete offline backup once every 28-day cycle
• Backup of offline redo log files on ongoing basis
• Schedule backup verification (db verify) once weekly
Backup and Restore Tools
SAP provides BRTOOLS for performing backups and restores. BRTOOLS was explained in
detail in the last chapter. In this chapter, the BRTOOLS will be covered that are specific to
backup and restore/recovery activities.
BRBACKUP
The BRBACKUP tool helps the Basis administrator perform a backup of the SAP system.
The tool can be called manually, or the backup job can be scheduled. One detailed real-life
backup configuration and execution will be covered in this chapter. Based on this, you can
plan and execute your own backups for your organization.
BRARCHIVE
The BRARCHIVE tool helps to back up the offline archive log files to either a disk or a
tape.
BRRESTORE
The BRRESTORE tool helps to restore a database in the event of user error or a disaster.
