Once the configuration work is complete, the changes are then released and a Basis ad-
ministrator moves them to the quality assurance system. Similarly, developers will create
ABAP code and tables in the development client. The settings in this client will allow
changes to the development objects, which are then are written to a change request usually
referred to as a “workbench request.” These settings will prevent changes to the configura-
tion settings of the system. Figure 9-3 shows the path of the configuration and development
objects from the development system to the quality, training, and production system envir-
onments.

Client settings for the quality assurance, training, and production systems are locked so
that objects cannot be allowed to make changes directly in these systems. The only system
where new changes can originate is the development system, and once the changes are re-
leased after the approval process, they will be moved to the downstream systems. Produc-
tion systems usually will have only one client and it is prevented from making any direct
