Client Instance Strategy
The SAP client instance strategy is a group of SAP systems in the landscape supporting im-
plementation of the software in an orderly manner with rigorous built-in change manage-
ment tools. Each system in the landscape will have one or more clearly defined clients. The
System Landscape involves the following systems with clearly defined roles.
Sandbox System
This system helps functional teams and developers test new and high-risk scenarios without
breaking the development system. Technical teams can also test patches and support pack-
ages in this system.
Development System
This system is the originator of all development and configuration objects of the SAP imple-
mentation. The development and configuration objects are moved from this system to the
rest of the landscape using SAP Transport Management System. More details of the SAP
Transport Management System (STMS) will be discussed in Chapter 11 .
Quality Assurance System
This system is used to perform integration and regressions testing before the objects are
moved to the training and production system environments.
Training Systems
These systems are used to train the end users before they start using the production system.
Production Systems
This is the system of record and is the live system where actual business transactions are
conducted.
Each of these systems has clients created for a specific purpose. Some systems have only
one client, while others may have several clients. In a typical SAP System Landscape, the
developers and configurators will do the initial prototype work in the sandbox systems.
Once the initial configuration looks good, it is then manually rekeyed in the development
systems. The development system has several clients, each serving a specific purpose. There
are at least three clients: the configuration master client, the development client, and the
unit-testing client. Functional consultants configure the system in the configuration client. In
this client, the settings will allow only client-specific configuration work and the changes
are automatically saved in the change requests (data packages with a predefined number).
(The details of the different client setting options and client administration activities are
covered in Chapter 10 . )
