SAP kernel executables are located in the /sapmnt/<SID>/exe directory. The kernel up-
grade procedure replaces the current set of kernel files with the newly extracted set. To com-
plete this task:
1. Make a backup copy of the current kernel (sapmnt/<SID>/exe directory) and name it
exeold.
2. Shut down SAP and SAPOSCOL (saposcol -k).
3. Make a new directory called /sapmnt/<SID>/exenew.
4.ExtractthenewkernelSARfilestoanewexenewdirectoryusingthefollowingsyntax:
5. Replace the kernel directory with the newly extracted kernel files.
6.Runthesaproot.shscriptusingtherootaccounttofixtheauthorizationsofsomekernel
files as shown:
7. Start the SAP system and SAPOSCOL (saposcol -l).
8. Perform basic technical checks after the kernel upgrade.
9. Check the kernel release level using the command disp+work -v | more.
10.CheckthekernelreleaseandpatchlevelusingtransactioncodeSM51|ReleaseNotes.
Please note that if it is not a complete kernel upgrade, you can shut down the SAP applic-
ation, make a backup of the current kernel, and overwrite the extracted files with the newer
extracted files. You can use the basic UNIX copy command with recursive option to per-
form this task.
