Kernel Upgrade
The SAP kernel is a group of both database-dependent and database-independent operating
system binaries installed in the /sapmnt/<SID>/exe directory. Kernel executables perform
functions such as memory management, database connections for performing imports, and
process and task management. The kernel of the ABAP stack is coded in C/C++ program-
ming language. The SAP kernel is installed as part of a standard SAP installation. However,
the kernel becomes old as SAP releases newer versions of the kernel patches.
The following procedure can be used to perform a kernel upgrade in SAP systems. The
first step is to download the following three SAR files from the SAP Software Download
Center:
• SAPEXE_<Patch level>-<release date>.SAR
• SAPEXEDB_<Patch level>-<release date>.SAR
• DBATOOLS. _<Patch level>-<release date>.SAR
