SAP System Naming Conventions
Before starting the SAP installations, it is very important to establish a naming convention
for choosing the SID, system numbers for the SAP systems that are in scope. The naming
conventions will help to standardize the SAP system identifier names and the network port
numbers, and will make sure that the chosen names and numbers are unique and do not pose
problems with port conflicts and multiple SAP systems with the same SID.
The following is an example of a naming convention that can be used for SAP systems:
• All development SAP systems have D as the first character.
• All quality assurance SAP systems have Q as the first character.
• All production SAP systems have P as the first character.
• All ECC systems have E as the second character.
• All BW systems have B as the second character.
• All portal systems have P as the second character.
The following is an example of the numbers that can be used for SAP systems:
• All development systems have a system number of 00.
• All quality systems have a system number of 01.
• All production systems have a system number of 02.
Table 5-2 shows how the SID and system number would appear when we apply these
naming conventions. The naming conventions can be extended for all other SAP solutions at
a given client site.
