Standard hotels in South Korea, especially in Seoul, are some of the most expensive
on the continent—paying the equivalent of US$300 for a pokey room is not uncom-
mon, and there's a noticeable shortage of quality mid-range accommodations along
the lines of those provided by business hotel chains in other countries.
This gap in the market is addressed somewhat by a couple of very local alternat-
ives: love hotels and
minbak,
a sort of cross between a guesthouse and a homestay.
