In-Depth Information
While multiple traditional sports, including ssirum, a form of wrestling, and the martial
art taekwondo, are still practiced, these days South Koreans seem far more enthusiastic
about imports. Soccer is probably the most widely watched and played sport, followed by
baseball and basketball. All these sports have national professional leagues with teams in
each major city sponsored by prominent local companies. Several South Korean soccer and
baseball players have made it to the roster of major teams abroad, and local archers and
golfers are also known for their domination of the global stage. As past (and future) hosts
and top performers, South Koreans take their showings in international competitions such
as the World Cup and the Olympics very seriously, and if events like these are on, it will
seem like the entire population is talking about nothing else.
