Since the late 1990s, after a lengthy spell in the cinematic wilderness in which it was diffi-
cult for them to attract even domestic audiences, South Korean directors have returned with
a vengeance, and in fact the country is now one of the few in the world where local rather
than Hollywood films dominate the box office. Much of this is thanks to the formidable tal-
ent exhibited by the likes of Kang Je-gyu, whose blockbuster spy drama Shiri heralded the
new wave of South Korean cinema, and Park Chang-wook, whose unflinching meditations
