In-Depth Information
sea view near Seogwipo
Jeju's southern half is comparatively more sedate, with its main city, the harbor town
of Seogwipo, akin to Jeju City's sleepier cousin. But it may not stay that way for long.
The sprawling Jungmun Resort Complex, which contains several luxury hotels, pristine
beaches, and golf courses, is also on the island's south coast, which seems to be the focus
of some of the larger planned retail and housing development projects, such as the Berjaya
Jeju Resort.
CLIMATE
Jeju lies in a subtropical climate zone and definitely enjoys warmer temperatures on average
than the South Korean mainland, but to imagine it as a sort of sultry paradise is a bit of
a stretch. Though winters are relatively short and mild, temperatures still drop to close to
freezing (though rarely below that, at least at lower elevations). Summers are hotter than in
other provinces, especially in the southern half of the island, with temperatures topping out
at around 35°C.
The island tends to receive stronger winds and more precipitation than the peninsula
nearly year-round. It's also more susceptible to typhoons in the summer, though fortunately
these usually dish out relatively little damage.
