Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheon Province) is squeezed between Jeollabuk-do
to the south and Gyeonggi Province and suburban Seoul to the north. Like its southern
neighbor, this is an agriculturally rich province of low hills, wide fields, and jagged coast-
line, but it is also distinguished by being the former heart of the Baekje kingdom and is
home to a number of relics, traditional arts, and festivals that proudly display this noble leg-
acy. Daejeon, the province's largest and the country's sixth-largest city, has steadily earned
a reputation as South Korea's research and development powerhouse.
CLIMATE
The west shares the temperate climate of the rest of the country, with mild springs and au-
tumns and chilly winters. Summers, however, are generally warmer, slightly longer, and
punctuated by more rainfall than in other areas, lending the region its optimum growing
conditions.
