In-Depth Information
kets, however, usually open on five- or seven-day cycles, that offer a staggering array of
fresh local produce, textiles, and household necessities, all at extremely low prices (al-
though some bargaining and knowledge of Korean may be required). Pungmul Market in
Chuncheon and Wonju's Munmak Market are among the liveliest.
Transport
Most of the government's efforts have been poured into road building, and as of yet there
are no major public transportation networks in Gangwon beyond the rapid buses and trains
that cart travelers to and from larger cities like Seoul and Daegu. Chuncheon, Wonju, and
Gangneung all have limited public bus services, but these are generally inefficient and
tough for the non-Korean speaker to navigate. As the province is a major tourism center,
there's a disproportionately large number of taxis available for hire; fares generally start at
2,200 won. Long-term residents usually find that a private vehicle is the only choice for
anyone wanting constant access to transport or to explore the province's remote corners.
