In-Depth Information
South Korea's geographically varied and culturally rich eastern region has been at the fore-
front of the country's development since its earliest days as a nation, when it was the power
base of the Silla kingdom that took the first major steps toward unifying the peninsula. This
legacy is still visible in the area's abundance of historic sites; it is a land littered with the
tombs of former rulers, ancient observatories, and some of the nation's finest examples of
Buddhist temple architecture.
