by its new homes and proximity to the Yongsan Family and Han Riverside Parks. Com-
plexes such as the Asterium and City Park offer plush high-rise living from around four
million won per month for three-bedroom 180-square-meter units, without a substantial de-
posit. Prices even for standard units in the area's modern developments average around 750
million won.

Mapo-gu, a district in northwestern Seoul, is famous for a couple of things: the striking
kite-shaped World Cup Stadium and higher education. At the heart of the district stand ven-
erable Yonsei University, one of Seoul's top schools, and Hongik University, the generator
of some of the country's top art and design talent. Generations of students have imbued the
district with a youthful energy and a vast profusion of offbeat boutiques, coffee shops, and
nightclubs. The narrow streets around Hongik's main gate and Sinchon Rotary, to the south
of the Yonsei campus, are packed with revelers nearly every night of the week.
Tucked away from the main roads are hundreds of goshiwon (dormitories) and older
villa-type apartments catering to the relatively impoverished student demographic. The area
