In-Depth Information
South Korea's main stock exchange is the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI),
which consists almost exclusively of domestic companies led by heavyweights like Sam-
sung Electronics, POSCO, and Hyundai Motor. There's also a secondary market, the
KOSDAQ, which was set up to highlight smaller, mainly technology-based start-ups, and
specialized markets for instruments like derivatives and commodities futures. All markets
are operated by the Korea Exchange, which is generally perceived as a sophisticated, tech-
savvy outfit. It is not, however, geared toward foreign investors: Many listed companies
make materially important announcements in Korean only, for example.
