sidering taking a job offer, ask to speak to current foreign teachers to sound them out about
the school or institute and the standard of housing provided. Check any contract to make
sure it's reasonably clear about the amount of hours you're expected to teach and what sort
of tax and other deductions will be taken from your paycheck. Never surrender your pass-
port to an employer, and remember there are government and legal agencies to turn to if
your pay is being withheld or you're being mistreated. And at the end of the day, no matter
what your boss might tell you, it is possible to simply leave if you're stuck in a dire situ-
ation.

Andrew Monteith
Canadian Andrew Monteith arrived in Korea in 1996 to work as an English instructor
in a hagwon and has been in the industry since, tackling everything from business
English classes at some of the country's largest conglomerates to public schools and
universities. He current works for Seoul's Hongik University, one of the country's
most renowned arts colleges.
