Knowing the terrible backstory makes the appearance of modern Lidice seem almost per-
verselyunexceptional. Attheendofthestraight,tree-linedmainstreet,10června1942(June
10, 1942), there's a dour concrete memorial featuring a small, horrific
museum
where you
can watch an eighteen-minute film about the village, including footage shot by the SS them-
selves as it was burning. The spot where old Lidice used to lie is just south of the memorial,
a smooth green pasture punctuated with simple artworks and a chilling bronze memorial de-
picting the 82 local children who never returned.
