Terezín
The old road from Prague to Berlin passes through the fortress town of
TEREZÍN
(Ther-
esienstadt), just over 60km northwest of the capital. Purpose-built in the 1780s by the Habs-
burgstodefendthenorthernborderagainstPrussia,itwascapableofaccommodating 14,500
soldiers and hundreds of prisoners. In 1941, the population was ejected and the whole town
turned into a
Jewish ghetto
, used as a transit camp for Jews whose final destination was
Auschwitz.

town. Today, it's an eerie, soulless place, built to a dour eighteenth-century grid plan, its
bare streets empty apart from the residual civilian population and visitors making their way
between the various museums and memorials. As you enter, the red-brick zigzag fortifica-
tions are still an awesome sight, though the huge moat has been given over to allotments.
