At the southern end of Ke Karlovu, the former Augustinian monastery of Karlov is now
the Muzeum Policie ČR . Under the Communists, the most famous exhibit was undoubtedly
Brek, the stuffed German Shepherd Dog who saw twelve years' service on border patrols,

the current exhibition concentrates on road and traffic offences and the force's latest chal-
lenges: forgery, drugs and murder. Sadly, there's not much information in English, but it's
still mildly diverting, in particular the exhibits on the Iron Curtain, the display of Czech po-
lice motorbikes through the ages, the parade of European police uniforms and the gruesome
section on forensic science. For the kids, there's a go-karting track ( dětské dopravní hřiště ).

Na Karlově
Ke Karlovu 1 • kostelnakarlove.com • Metro I.P. Pavlova
The monastic church of Na Karlově , founded by Charles IV (of course) and designed in
imitation of Charlemagne's tomb in Aachen, is quite unlike any other church in Prague. If
it's open, you should take a look at the musty interior, which was remodelled in the sixteenth
century by Bonifaz Wohlmut. The stellar vault has no central supporting pillars - a remark-
able feat of engineering for its time, and one that gave rise to numerous legends about the
architect being in league with the devil. The later Baroque fittings are just as arresting, with

the south door, and beneath them, a set of holy stairs and a subterranean Bethlehem grotto
(Betlémské jeskyňe).
