ANTAMINA
The Antamina Mine is located in the Antamina valley in the Andes Mountains, north-
central Peru. The Antamina deposit is the largest known copper-zinc skarn in the
world with zinc, silver, lead, molybdenum and bismuth mineralization. The US$ 2.2 billion
construction program was one of the largest new mine development projects ever under-
taken. In order to reach the mineral deposits the tops of several mountains had to be removed
and a lagoon drained. The mine commenced operation in late 2001 with an estimated mine
life of more than 20 years. This project alone increased Peru's gross domestic product by
nearly 1 percent and increased Peruvian mining production by 30 percent in 2002.
