MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is a silvery white, light weight reactive metal which tarnishes readily. The
main uses of this metal are in the manufacture of light weight alloys, used in the
automotive and aircraft industries, and for consumer products such as mobile phones
and cameras. Alkaline compounds of magnesium are used in agriculture and for water
treatment. Magnesium is an essential element for all organisms, occurring in all cells. It
is the third most common element in sea water, from which it is commonly extracted.
It also occurs in the minerals dolomite and magnesite. Most of its compounds are
non-toxic and many have medicinal properties.
