CHROMIUM
Chromium is a hard, lustrous, steel gray metal which can sustain a high polish. It is
corrosion resistant and has a high melting temperature. It is an essential trace metal;
however, in its hexavalent form it is toxic and mutagenic. Chromium metal is used in
stainless steel and other alloys, chrome plating and for anodizing aluminium. Chromium
compounds are used in dies, paints and glazes, and in tanning of leather. It is extracted
mainly from the mineral chromite which is an oxide of both chromium and iron.
